Fifty years elapsed since Dr. Sambhunath De (1915-1985), MBBS, DTM, Ph.D., D.Sc. (University of London), D.Sc. (Posthumous, Calcutta University) discovered cholera toxin produced by Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of severe diarrhoeal disease cholera. He published his epoch-making discovery in the highly prestigious journal Nature. The rehydration therapy for replenishing the massive fluid loss in cholera patients that saves innumerable lives till today, should be considered as a direct outcome of De’s discovery of cholera toxin. His findings also set the stage for the modern views on the diseases caused by toxin producing bacteria and helped in the development of series of cholera and other related vaccines. Prof. Josua Lederberg, Nobel Laureate, felt that De’s discovery was deserved for the Nobel Prize.
To commemorate the discovery of cholera toxin by Prof. S.N. De, an International Symposium will be held from October 25 to 27, 2009 in Kolkata, India. This International Symposium is being organized by three premier Institutes of the country, namely, National Institute of Cholera & Enteric Diseases, Indian Institute of Chemical Biology and Bose Institute, where research on cholera is being actively carried out.
